The definitive guide to development with the 4D Web server. The book and sample code document the 4D Web server's built-in and hidden features. The 4D Web Companion explains how to solve common, real-world problems with the 4D Web server. If You're Interested in the Book... 4D is a great tool for creating dynamic Web systems. Mastering 4D Web development requires learning about several large subjects:
With so many subjects to master, it is difficult to know where to start and how all the pieces fit together. The 4D Web Companion provides the core information needed from each area. The 4D Web Companion book and sample code also explain how to solve common, real-world problems with the 4D Web server, including:

This site includes downloadable demos, up-to-date recommendations, and other information for use in conjunction with The 4D Web Companion. Reader Comments The 4D Web Companion provides, in David Adams' uniquely lucid style, the first really clear and accurate description of the 4D Web server. At the same time, it describes robust strategies for implementing Web-based database solutions using 4D or other Web servers. I cannot recommend this volume highly enough to 4D programmers of any experience level. Anyone thinking about doing any kind of Web development with 4D should buy this book! This is an essential guide and reference to anyone wanting to use any of the Web publishing or Internet integration features available with 4D. In 450+ pages David has covered every angle of 4D's Web functionality, including 3rd party plug-ins and products which can be used with 4D. This is far more than a supplement to the 4D documentation and is suitable for developers of all levels who want to get up to speed with Web development in 4D, fast! If you are in need of a comprehensive and structured tutorial on 4D Web "stuff" - look no further! This book covers how 4D works with the Web, what commands to use for a task type, tips, traps, and even a general "how the Web works" explanation. Once again, David has done a superb job. 10 out of 10! Mr. Adams new efforts provides unprecedented guidance for 4D developers everywhere. No single source of materials encompasses the breadth, or depth, available with this new book. Finally, any 4D developer can learn in detail what is necessary to move a 4D database online. This book sets a new standard. At long last there is a book that helps 4th Dimension developers embrace the Web. This is that book. Dave's enjoyable writing style, mixed with a broad base of information, ensures that the developer's journey into the Web with 4D is easy and fun. I commend and applaud David for writing this book, and urge anyone that is even thinking of using 4D in anyway with the Web, to buy this book and read it cover to cover. Without this, the road is long and difficult. Do yourself a favour and get this book immediately. About the Author David Adams started using 4D in 1988. After a few years, he figured he knew everything there was to know about 4D, so he pestered 4D, Inc. until they hired him. He quickly found out that he didn't know anything about 4D. While at 4D, Inc., he managed and developed their internal networks for three and a half years, wrote and delivered 4D-Web trainings, and wrote about fifty technical notes. He left 4D, Inc. to relocate to Hawaii. During his first years in Hawaii he did custom 4D consulting and wrote the book Programming 4th Dimension with his friend Dan Beckett. Then he worked for Foresight Solutions for one year as their Director of Training. He wrote a few 4D classes that he delivered throughout the United States. Foresight left the 4D tools and consulting market, so he left Foresight. In 2000 he published The 4D 6.5 Companion and in 2001 The 4D Web Companion. Currently he divides his time between travel, writing books and trainings, presenting trainings worldwide, and doing custom consulting. He now lives on the far south coast of New South Whales in Australia and works for clients worldwide. |
